No wonder this app has two stars in the app store1. I've been using this app for years now, but it's been a while since I've used it for leasurely reading. The past two years has found me using it more often for grad school. If required books for my courses were available on Kindle and had corresponding page numbers, it was typically more cost effective, easier to organize notes, and allowed me to easily read and take notes anywhere. I do wish there were some more features, particularly when it comes to exporting highlights and notes. I wish that, just as we can filter our highlights and notes in the app, we could do the same when exporting highlights and notes. For example, if I only wanted to export the highlights and notes that I starred rather than every highlight and note, then I could do so by applying a filter.
That way I could export the notes I know I need and found to be highly applicable and important to my work at the time, while still keeping the entirety of my highlights and notes on the app in the event that I need to export all of them in the future. I also wish that you could do more formatting with any notes that you take. I usually have to copy and paste my exported highlights and notes into OneNote and then reformat eveything. It would be nice to at least put bullet points in the "notes" section. However, using it on MacOS is frustrating. Seven months ago I purchased a book on Javascript and attempted to work my way through it. With no input from me whatsoever, the pages jumped forwards or backwards by pages. Then I would have to go back and find the page I was on. Clicking to find the page would also result in it going much further than I intended it to. Then sometimes that would go too far. When I ordered another book, this time on Python, it was the same wretched experience.
I gave up on it a few times, then came back because I already paid for the book and was determined to get through it. I love Kindle and Audible and I hate to give it a bad review but on Mac, this app is garbage. The following data may be collected and linked to your identity:. In an engaging conversational tone, Eric Grannis invites young readers to ponder the history and unearthing of metal from the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt to the discovery, in the Modern times, of electricity. He encourages the reader to identify with the protagonists of this journey, experiencing their curiosity and the excitement of finding or deducing answers to the questions raised when results are not as anticipated. For example, a greenish nugget discovered in Mesopotamia about 10, years ago had the property that when cut in half and polished the cut surface took on a shiny brownish tone.
Furthermore, the substance could be pounded almost flat and was malleable enough to take on various shapes. Thus the Mesopotamians considered that this material, called malachite, might be useful for making household objects, tools and weapons. And indeed it was. This is followed by a series of images showing the various objects that ancient people made from the originally amorphous nugget. And it must be said that throughout the book the images are well-chosen and extremely apt as illustrations of the very points that Grannis makes in the text. Throughout, the authorâs tone is friendly and encouraging, often giving the reader pats on the back for arriving at correct conclusions.
He then goes into the question of how these ancient people might produce many of these nuggets and not be dependent on finding them at random. As is usual in these things, this discovery was by accident rather than design. They found that by mixing and firing Malachite with charcoal in an especially hot fire, after the fire was spent and the result cooled actually froze! They had discovered smelting. This was to serve them well because as a result they experimented with adding other metals with a high melting point, such as tin, in various proportions. This mixture was so useful that an entire age came to be called the Bronze Age from about BCE on. The alloy bronze is much stronger than copper and can be used to produce bronze knives and swords that can be sharpened and will hold their edge much longer than those made of copper.
The author then goes on to explain why the alloy bronze is stronger than objects made purely of copper, thus introducing the reader to the structure of alloys. In a sequence of subheadings, we read about the Egyptiansâ and then the Greekâs use of bronze in the production of weapons, household objects and even works of art. Grannis then moves from the physical properties of an atom to the structure of the outer ring or shell, which controls chemical changes and the creation of molecules. The author further discusses smelting, the process of removing impurities from iron to produce wrought iron, which could then be heated and hammered into useful objects. Following this is a section outlining the production of charcoal, and the Chinese invention of the blast furnace in the early years of the Common Era.
Eventually, in Europe this soon led to the large-scale or industrial production of goods, initiating the Industrial Revolution. One of the most important inventions of the Industrial Revolution was the steam engine followed by the invention of the Bessimer converter. The book ends with sections on discoveries of the 19th century, including light metals such as aluminum , and electricity. A discussion of gold leads the reader to understand that the degree of rarity of a material is correlated with its value: since gold is extremely rare it is extremely expensive. The final section, entitled âWhat the Discovery of Metal Teaches Us about Science? â is a wonderful way to end the story. The author narrates the accidental discovery of penicillin: a scientist growing bacteria in a petri dish for experimental purposes found that mold contaminating the bacteria in the dish prevented the bacteria from growing.
Instead of angrily throwing the dish away, he wondered if the mold could also prevent bacteria from growing in the human body. It turned out it did. The discovery of penicillin subsequently saved hundreds of millions of lives. In this way the author encourages his readers not to take the world around them for granted but to ask the questions whose answers might lead to important discoveries. Easy tu use and organize my ebooks. OK, it accomplishes what it's supposed to do. A training book with a lot of difficult vocabulary and every section you would expect in a test.
But let me warn you, if you're an old folk like me and you feel better with paper you will suffer. This is strictly digital and Kindle format doesn't allow printing. It works like a PDF but even more abstract. The book itself is a bit brief but it has the necessary level of difficulty. I suggest you to use it with a notebook. And I guess that's all, you've been warned. Works well. Easy to use. Unable to delete read books from my library. Then my kindel app goes away. I then spend time trying to down load a new app. How about a heads up that I need to renew my kindl kindel app. Why exactly is no download provided? Can't get this app downloaded and need help. I just got a new M1 Macbook Pro and I'm pleased that the Kindle app runs on it. No problems with crashing like I see from some other users. My main complaint is about the management of dark mode: the app allows you to set to light or dark mode, but does not have a setting to "use system setting".
As I switch modes from time to time, I really want that mode to be controlled by the system, not one more manual control I have to fix every time I change modes. Furthermore, when you set dark mode, it appears to only affect the list of books in the library, not the reading pane. You have to set those colors separately. Overall, the UI controls for color are spread out all over the place, hard to find, hard to coordinate, and very poorly implemented. The app just won't get five stars from me until this issue is resolved. My suggestion is to make a color setting that allows "use system setting", and to make the reading pane backgrounds of white and sepia into "light" mode colors and black background into "dark" mode colors.
Whichever light mode color you choose, it goes black when you choose dark mode. It would also be nice to have a range of dark gray backgrounds to go with the black and some light grays for text - a bit less harsh on the eyes. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. My iMac OS Snowleopard was out of date and Kindle gradually withdrew the service until I updated it. My iPad was unaffected. When I did the update all my books were there and I find the App on my iMac useful to check whether I have downloaded a book currently being offered. Although if I do take up an offer Amazon always tell me if I have previously bought it; that is a useful feature.
Actually Kindle really forced me to take up the new El Capitan OS which i had resisted as feedback had indicated many problems. in the event the download went smoothly apart from a mess up with the email but tis was eventually sorted. Then I found that all sorts of Apps which had previously started to fail came good. So, many side benefits from the Kindle upgrade. One person found this helpful. This app opened the door to a huge world of books and audio books that are not available on iTunes. Get this if you can't find things on iTunes.
Just might find what you need. Easy to use as well, some complaints about the system but mostly happy because I can read things otherwise not available elsewhere in E format. Report abuse. Nice app but still 32 bit. Will become obsolete this autumn unless Amazon re-issue it as a 64bit app. the next Mac OS - Mac OS High Sierra will not run 32bit apps. Continues to improve. I try to have both Kindle and paper hard cover books but there are no updates for paper books! I would like to turn off the Last Page Read so that indexes an be consulted, but it is easy to reset online. Having said that. This is not exactly seamlessly integrated the Kindle is not listed in my applications and cannot be found anywhere on the APPLE. I need to run the Kindle installer from downloads every time I want to use the Kindle. Which is kind of annoying. Having said that, it only takes a minute, and after that the Kindle works fine.
